Our Concerns
Irresponsible Spending
Why spend 1.3+ million dollars to purchase and tear down residential properties? Why not use some of the 30-plus acres of public land CUSD 220 already owns?
Why wasn't this planned for in Referendum 2024/Transform 220? How did they not know at that time that they needed 40 more parking spaces?
Increased Taxes
Won't residents' taxes increase when four fewer homes are contributing to the tax base?
Won't residents' taxes increase when the surrounding properties are devalued, thereby contributing less in taxes?
Spot Zoning
If this is about 40 parking spaces, why is CUSD 220 appraising another property on N Hager Ave?
What's preventing CUSD 220 from buying up homes next to Hough Street Elementary, Grove Avenue Elementary, Sunny Hill Elementary, Roslyn Road Elementary or other neighborhood schools in CUSD 220?
How does rezoning this space from residential to public land align with Barrington's Comprehensive Plan, which strives to "maintain the existing scale and character of each neighborhood and to minimize encroachment..."?
Indifference to the Impact to Residents
What happens to the residents who are displaced? A GoFundMe has been started to assist with one employee of CUSD 220's move.
What happens to the children who are displaced? How will they continue to attend CUSD 220 schools once their homes are demolished?
Lack of Transparency
Residents impacted by this purchase were not notified by CUSD 220 when it was approved at the August 19, 2025 BoE meeting. Four homeowners met with District representatives on Sept. 17, 2025 after one homeowner requested the meeting. The District did not initiate the discussion.
